Waste less this Christmas
Christmas is a time for treats and traditions, but it often brings extra waste. Here are some simple ways to enjoy the season while being kind to your pocket and the planet.

Love your leftovers!
Plan meals, store food properly and get creative with leftovers. You’ll save money, cut waste and still enjoy every bite.
We’ve teamed up with student chefs from South Eastern Regional College to create tasty, budget-friendly recipes for our new More Taste, Less Waste guide. Watch our social media for its release later this year. Here’s one to try with your Christmas leftovers:
Coronation turkey sandwiches
- Mix 6 tbsp mayonnaise, 2 - 3 tsp mild curry powder, ½ tsp cinnamon, 2 tbsp mango chutney and 1 - 3 tbsp sultanas
- Stir in 500g shredded turkey
- Season with pepper and serve in sandwiches, jacket potatoes or salads
- Store in the fridge and use within two days.
Switch to rechargeable batteries
Toys and gadgets use lots of batteries at Christmas. Rechargeables are cheaper long-term and better for the environment.
We’re giving away five sets of rechargeable batteries and chargers. To enter, email wastecomp@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk with the household item you use batteries in most. The closing date for entries is Monday 8th December 2025.
Be safe: recycle old batteries at your local Household Recycling Centre or any shop that sells batteries. Never put them in your bin as they can cause fires!
