Mayor champions Action Cancer
This year, Mayor Grehan has chosen Action Cancer as her charity, with a focus on breast cancer awareness and early detection. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Northern Ireland, accounting for 30% of female cancer diagnoses.

Early detection saves lives, which is why women over 40 are encouraged to have regular breast screening. The NHS routinely screens women aged 50 to 70, but Action Cancer goes further by offering screenings for women aged 40 to 49 and 70+. This vital service helps women outside the NHS programme catch cancers early, when treatment is most effective.
Mayor Grehan said: "Cancer can affect anyone and I have seen the impact it has on families. During my term, I will work with Action Cancer to raise funds for local breast screening and promote awareness so more people can benefit from early diagnosis. There will be many events for everyone to get involved in.”
To mark the campaign, the motto, ‘Be Your Own Breast Friend’, has been planted in the Mayor’s charity flower bed, encouraging women to book their screening. Make sure to take a selfie by the bed in Lagan Valley Island and share it on social media, tagging Action Cancer and the council to help spread awareness.
