Safe summer, happy days!
Summer is almost here and that means BBQs, beach trips and long sunny afternoons but staying safe makes the fun last even longer.

Grill smart
Before you fire up the BBQ, wash your hands for 20 seconds. Keep raw meat away from ready-to-eat food and use separate utensils for raw and cooked dishes (different-coloured tongs help).
Take your time cooking burgers and sausages thoroughly. If you’re unsure, pop them in the oven first and finish them off on the BBQ for that smoky flavour. Keep salads, sides and desserts chilled. More tips at https://www.food.gov.uk/
Cool off safely
Warm weather can make rivers, lakes and the sea especially tempting, but it’s important to be aware that the risk of drowning increases during summer months. Before entering the water, stop and check for hazards such as cold temperatures, strong currents and uneven depths.
Always swim in lifeguarded areas where possible, know your limits, enter the water slowly and never swim alone. In an emergency, call 999. If you fall into water unexpectedly, try to stay calm, float on your back and shout for help — it could save your life!
Protect your skin
This doesn’t mean hiding indoors. Seek shade during peak sun hours (late morning to early afternoon), wear lightweight long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat and UV sunglasses.
Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 15+ and four-star UVA protection (SPF 30+ is recommended for everyone, while SPF 50 is advised for kids or those with fair skin).
Reapply sunscreen every two hours and remember, no single measure is foolproof so mix and match your sun-smart strategies.
