Local ice dancer skates onto national stage

Sixteen-year-old Mollie Rainey is proving that world-class talent can emerge from right here in Lisburn and Castlereagh.

In an incredible achievement, Mollie has been selected for the Solo Ice Dance Team GB Development Squad and is currently the only skater from Northern Ireland to be chosen.

Mollie has skated at Dundonald International Ice Bowl since the age of five and has spent the past 11 years honing her skills on the ice. Coached by Dancing on Ice star Maria Filippov, Mollie has consistently progressed through the ranks, qualifying for the British Championships for the past four years and recently placing fourth at a major qualifier in Sheffield. She has also achieved podium success at international competitions and will soon represent Great Britain at the Edge Cup in Poland.

A key part of Mollie’s training journey has been her family’s use of the council’s Vitality Membership, which provides access to Dundonald International Ice Bowl and nearby fitness facilities. Mollie’s mum, Marina, said: “We joined the Vitality Membership shortly after it launched and it has been incredibly convenient for us since we spend so much time at the Ice Bowl.

“Mollie trains before and after school and at weekends and having access to local fitness facilities has played a vital role in supporting her off-ice training alongside her studies.”

Mollie’s success highlights both the impact of local investment and the exciting future ahead for ice sports, as Dundonald International Ice Bowl prepares for its £64 million redevelopment, set to transform the facility for generations to come.
