The Mayor, Alderman Amanda Grehan, has opened an online book of condolence so the people of Lisburn and Castlereagh can express their sympathy and condolences on the passing of the Duchess of Kent.

Opening the book, she said: “As Mayor, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent at the age of 92.

“The Duchess was widely admired for her compassion, humility and quiet dedication to public service.  She was a reassuring presence during many significant moments in our national life and worked tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to support causes close to her heart.  Her 1980 visit to Northern Ireland with The Duke of Kent marked a poignant and hopeful chapter in the region’s history, reflecting her deep belief in reconciliation and peace.

“Beyond her official duties, the Duchess led a life of remarkable personal service. She volunteered with The Passage, a homelessness charity, and chose to step back from royal life for 13 years to teach music in a primary school, a rare and selfless act that spoke volumes about her character and values.

“Her legacy is one of kindness, empathy and unwavering commitment to helping others, especially the most vulnerable in our society.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, their children and grandchildren and the wider Royal Family as they mourn their loss.  May we all take a moment to reflect on the life of the Duchess of Kent and the many lives she touched through her quiet strength and enduring message of hope.”
