Employment & Skills Academies

Employment academies provide tailored training to help people who are unemployed or working less than 16 hours per week to find jobs by providing the practical skills and experience that is required to enter into a new career.  The following support programmes will be offered throughout the year including:

HGV Transport Academy

The HGV Transport Academy provides all the required training to enable participants to acquire the Category C / HGV Class 2 licence and supports them to compete for professional driver roles with local employers.

Who can apply?

Candidates must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • A resident of the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area
  • Be aged 21 and over
  • Be unemployed or work less than 16 hours per week
  • Hold a valid UK Driving Licence for at least two years and have no penalty points
  • Willing to undertake a medical examination
  • Be available for training, medical, theory and practical aspects of the academy

Health and Social Care Employment Academy

The Health and Social Care Academy will be delivered over five days, specifically created to fast track your journey into employment. During the workshops, you will learn the introductory skills to help you adapt quickly to work in your chosen sector.  This allows you to find out what each of the various job roles involves, to ensure you know what is expected of you as a team member. You will be getting insight into the industry before deciding if it is right for you before accepting the job offer.

Every participant that completes the employment academy will be guaranteed a job interview.

Who can apply?

The Employment Academy is open to residents of Lisburn & Castlereagh who are currently out of work or working less than 16 hours a week.  Preference will be given to those who are economically inactive or long-term unemployed.

Construction Employment Academy

The Construction Academy is for those aged 26 and under, who are looking to start a career in the construction industry.

Applicants selected for training will take part in the programme to give them the certificates and skills needed to begin work in the construction sector. The academy provides:

  • CSR card
  • First aid training
  • Manual handling training
  • Onsite work experience. 
  • Sector-specific support including application form support, CV and interview skills building.

Every participant that completes the employment academy will be guaranteed a job interview.
