More than 500 students from post-primary schools across the Lisburn & Castlereagh area explored the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at the inaugural STEM in Action: Lisburn & Castlereagh event.
The event was delivered through the Labour Market Partnership initiative, funded by the Department for Communities, which supports local employment action plans and helps address skills needs across the region.
Designed for Year 12 to Upper Sixth students, the event brought together over 50 representatives from 20 employers, universities, colleges and training providers to help young people discover future career pathways and gain first-hand insight into the opportunities available across STEM industries.
Held at Lagan Valley Island, the event was designed to move beyond the traditional careers fair format, placing students at the centre of an interactive and immersive experience. Throughout the day, participants engaged directly with employers, heard from industry professionals and took part in a range of hands-on activities aimed at bringing STEM careers to life.
Students rotated through four dedicated zones, including:
- STEM in Action Live featuring interactive demonstrations from Mark the Science Guy;
- Space in Action, delivered in partnership with Armagh Planetarium;
- An Employer Engagement Zone, providing direct access to employers, universities and colleges; and
- The STEM Build a City Challenge, designed to develop teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills.
Chair of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council's Regeneration and Growth Committee, Alderman James Baird, said:
"STEM in Action has provided hundreds of young people with an exciting opportunity to engage directly with employers, training providers and educators while experiencing STEM subjects in a fun and interactive way.
"The level of enthusiasm and engagement throughout the day was fantastic to see, and the positive feedback received from schools, employers and participants demonstrates the value of creating opportunities that connect young people with future career pathways and local industry."
Feedback from schools, employers and participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many already expressing an interest in seeing STEM in Action return in 2027.
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council would like to thank all employers, education providers, volunteers, schools and partners who contributed to the success of the event.
