A new exhibition exploring Lisburn and Castlereagh’s historic connections with the United States has opened at the Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum.

‘USA 250: Atlantic Connections’, which marks the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, was officially opened on Tuesday 7th July by Cllr Bronagh Magee, Vice-Chair of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s (LCCC) Communities and Wellbeing Committee. The launch was also attended by the Mayor of LCCC, Cllr Brian Higginson.

The exhibition explores the stories behind this milestone anniversary and the local connections that link Lisburn and Castlereagh to America’s history. On 4th July 1776, thirteen colonies on the east coast of North America declared independence from Great Britain, leading to the creation of the United States of America. Looking beyond that landmark moment, the exhibition highlights the many Atlantic connections linking local people, places and stories with America, before and after independence.

Councillor Magee said: “This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the deep and enduring connections between Lisburn and Castlereagh and the United States as we mark 250 years since the American Declaration of Independence. Through local stories, people and places, ‘USA 250: Atlantic Connections’ helps bring this shared history to life and highlights the important role our area has played in wider Atlantic history.

“I would encourage residents and visitors alike to visit the Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum and take the opportunity to explore this fascinating exhibition, which brings our local heritage and transatlantic connections vividly to life.”

The exhibition is free to attend, with no booking required, and will remain on display until December 2026.
