A new PEACEPLUS-funded Community Network has been launched to help communities across Lisburn and Castlereagh connect, collaborate and share ideas.
The programme will support urban and rural groups to build relationships at local District Electoral Area (DEA) level before linking into a wider cross-community network across the council area. It will also provide capacity-building and networking opportunities for groups and organisations representing a range of areas and interests.
The programme has been shaped by a co-design phase which identified a need for stronger connections between communities across the council area. By bringing groups together regularly through local District Electoral Area (DEA) networks, the project will support community development, strengthen sustainability and contribute to local regeneration. It will also build on work already undertaken by the council to develop the emerging community and voluntary sector infrastructure, with a focus on using innovation, digital technology and communication skills to help communities grow and adapt.
The outcome will provide opportunities and platforms from which participants can learn from established forums to help communities to self-govern, network and build better relationships and partnerships. The network will provide support, sharing of information, advice, guidance, practical help and solutions to the members of the group. It will help to build the confidence of local community groups to maximise connections, development and growth opportunities leading to further cohesion, peace and prosperity.
Speaking at the event, Councillor Uel Mackin, Chair of the Lisburn & Castlereagh PEACEPLUS Partnership congratulated all those who worked tirelessly in developing the Project and said: “The Community Network will bring communities together to connect, collaborate and share. This programme will help build confidence, strengthen local networks and support long-term sustainability across the council area.
“It is encouraging to see urban and rural groups being given opportunities to learn from one another, develop new skills and build stronger relationships. This work has real potential to promote cohesion, peace and prosperity, and I wish everyone involved every success.”
The Community Network Project will run until April 2028 across the council area. For more information on the project and courses, please contact Gemma McCaughley at Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council on 07826536979 or Gemma.McCaughley@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk.
