Six servicemen killed at a Lisburn half marathon 38 years ago were remembered tonight (15 June 2026) at a special ceremony held at Market Place, the site of the attack.
The servicemen had participated in a popular fundraising charity run and were returning to Thiepval Barracks when a terrorist bomb exploded, destroying the vehicle in which they were travelling.
The men who died were Sergeant Michael J. Winkler, Lance Corporal William J Paterson, Lance Corporal Graham P. Lambie, Lance Corporal Derek W. Green, Signalman Mark R. Clavey and Corporal Ian Metcalfe.
Tonight, The Right Worshipful the Mayor, Councillor Brian Higginson was joined by families of the servicemen, Major Mears from Thiepval Barracks, representatives of the Royal British Legion, fellow elected members, Director of Finance & Corporate Services, Paul Dane, and members of the public to pay tribute to the soldiers, and the 11 people injured in the attack. The Mayor’s Chaplain, Reverend Nicholas Dark, led the attendees in prayer.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Mayor Higginson said: “It is my privilege to represent the Council and lay a wreath in remembrance of these courageous young soldiers. We return here each year to honour their memory and to ensure that their service, integrity and sacrifice are never forgotten.
"Tonight, we stand together in witness and remembrance: for those who were injured, for the families and colleagues of the soldiers, and for all who continue to carry the memory of this attack. I hope it brings some measure of comfort to know that this day, and those affected by it, will always be remembered.
"I offer my sincere condolences and pay tribute to the dedication of the Armed Forces in the service of their country. Together, we honour the memory of the six soldiers and all those affected by this tragedy.”
