Today (22 June) Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Brian Higginson led the annual ceremony at Lagan Valley Island to honour the Armed Forces of the past, present and future.
The Armed Forces Flag Raising Ceremony was attended by Deputy Lieutenant for Co Antrim, Danny Kinahan, representatives from Armed Forces organisations, together with Aldermen and Councillors from Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.
Addressing guests, Mayor Higginson said: “Armed Forces Day gives us the opportunity to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: those currently serving, service families, veterans and cadets. It is also a time to reflect with gratitude on the contribution they have made, continue to make, and will make in the years ahead.
"It is a privilege to host this ceremony each year and to welcome our local servicemen and women, veterans, cadets, and representatives of the organisations and associations that support service families."
The Mayor invited His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenant, Mr Danny Kinahan to raise the Armed Forces Flag, which was followed by a two-minute silence.
The Armed Forces Day Flag is a symbol of gratitude for the bravery, dedication and achievements of service personnel, and a tribute to those who have been injured or who have sadly lost their lives in service. It is being flown at buildings and landmarks throughout the country.
