Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council is leading the way in the safe storage and disposal of damaged or swollen lithium-ion household batteries.
Damaged or swollen lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous if not handled and disposed of properly. To help keep everyone safe we’ve introduced a dedicated Damaged Lithium Battery Storage Box at Carryduff Household Recycling Centre. The container is engineered to contain the extreme heat and toxic fumes which can be generated if damaged lithium-ion batteries catch fire.
Alderman Sharon Skillen, Environment and Sustainability Chair, recently met with staff at Carryduff Household Recycling Centre to check out the new service. She said: “I welcome the introduction of the lithium-ion battery bunker at Carryduff Household Recycling Centre. This facility will help protect residents, staff and council facilities from risks posed by damaged or swollen lithium-ion batteries. I encourage everyone to ensure that batteries are always recycled responsibly and never put them in the bin”.
If you have a damaged or swollen lithium-ion battery it should be taken to Carryduff Household Recycling Centre for safe disposal. Speak to a member of staff when you arrive.
Please note: damaged or swollen lithium-ion batteries are not accepted at The Cutts or Drumlough Household Recycling Centres. Intact batteries can be recycled in the dedicated battery recycling container at any of our three Household Recycling Centres.
