Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has launched an Over 50s Summer Scheme. The programme, which runs to 4 August offers a diverse range of activities designed to encourage older residents to stay active, connected, and engaged throughout the summer months.

The Over 50s Summer Scheme forms a key part of the council’s Age Friendly Strategy and Action Plan 2024-2026, funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA). The programme reinforces the council’s commitment to supporting the health, wellbeing, and participation of its ageing population. It is funded by the council’s Community Services Unit and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).

Over the eight-week programme, participants can enjoy a fun and inclusive mix of activities including tours, exhibitions, exercise classes, craft workshops, and even a circus skills workshop—proving it’s never too late to try something new and unexpected.

Councillor Gretta Thompson, Age Friendly Champion, said: "We're excited to launch our new Seniors Summer Scheme, designed to keep our older residents healthy, active, and connected over the summer months.

Many have shared that regular clubs and activities tend to pause during the summer, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. As Age Friendly Champion, I wanted to help bridge that gap — and this scheme is a step toward ensuring no one feels left out.”

These events are fun, varied, and welcoming, and we’re proud to support positive ageing through an inclusive programme that puts community first. I look forward to seeing the Seniors Summer Scheme grow into a valued part of our Age Friendly calendar.”

Councillor Tim Mitchell, Communities and Wellbeing Chair said: "I hope all participants enjoy the programme and take full advantage of the activities on offer. It’s a wonderful opportunity to try something new, meet others, and embrace an active lifestyle."

Participant, Maura, aged 80, from Lisburn, shared her experience: "It’s great to have something like this in the community. I’ve tried new things, met new friends, and it’s given me a real boost over the summer. I’m already looking forward to the next event!"

Lisburn & Castlereagh’s population currently includes 18% aged 65 and over, a figure expected to rise to 25% by 2041. The Age Friendly Strategy and Action Plan 2024-2026 outlines the Council’s ongoing dedication to enabling older citizens to live fulfilling, independent lives.
