More people could soon be encouraged to shop, dine, meet friends and enjoy days out in Lisburn City Centre and Royal Hillsborough following support for a new free weekend parking pilot.
The proposed scheme follows the success of previous free parking initiatives, which showed that visitors stayed longer and helped attract additional Saturday footfall, providing a welcome boost for local businesses. Research also indicated that free parking has the potential to increase visits throughout the year, helping support town centre activity beyond the festive season.
Under the proposal, free weekend parking would be available in council-owned car parks from December 2026 until the end of January 2028.
Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Committee, Alderman Sharon Skillen, said: "Our city centre and village are at their best when they're busy, vibrant and full of people enjoying everything they have to offer.
"We've already seen the positive impact that free parking can have in encouraging people to visit, stay longer and support local businesses. From shopping and dining to spending time with family and friends, this pilot would help make Lisburn and Royal Hillsborough even more attractive destinations at the weekend.
"Local businesses are at the heart of our communities and this proposal is about building on what is already working to support them and encourage even more people to spend time locally."
The pilot recommendation will now be considered by full Council for ratification.
