The Commonwealth Flag was raised at Lagan Valley Island, Lisburn today (9 March 2026) to officially mark Commonwealth Day. It is a symbol of the ties of kinship and affinity cherished by members of one worldwide Commonwealth community.

Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Alderman Amanda Grehan, was joined by His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenant, Mr Iain Getty, DL, elected representatives and senior council officers.

Deputy Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mr Iain Getty raised the Commonwealth Flag at the council headquarters.  This is the council’s opportunity to acknowledge the continuing aspiration of the Commonwealth to build on common traditions, uphold shared values of democracy, inclusive development and respect for diversity.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Grehan said: “This year’s theme of ‘Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth’ resonates strongly with our city.

“Lisburn and Castlereagh is a place where community spirit, innovation and partnership help us create opportunities for everyone, from our young people to our longstanding residents.

“As members of the Commonwealth family, we share a commitment to prosperity, inclusivity and respect for diversity.  By working together locally and globally we can continue to build a stronger more connected future for all.”

Mayor Grehan read the Commonwealth Affirmation - a pledge to uphold and serve the values and fellowship of our unique global family.  It included how respect for the natural world and empowering young people in every part of the Commonwealth play a part in shaping a better future in which we can thrive together.

Councillor Brian Higginson, Corporate Services Chairman, read the Commonwealth Day Message from Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Nations, The Right Honourable Shirley Botchwey. It said: “The Commonwealth is not held together by force or geography. It is sustained by conviction. Fifty-six countries, one third of humanity, united by a shared commitment to democracy, human rights, the rule of law and opportunity for all.”
