Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is inviting residents, sports clubs, schools and community organisations to have their say on its Draft Pitches Strategy 2026-2031 and Beyond. The 12-week public consultation will run from 28th September until 21st December and will help shape the future development of playing pitches and sports facilities across the council area.
The draft strategy has been developed in response to increasing demand for sports and physical activity facilities across the council area. It sets out a long-term vision to support participation at all levels, from youth sport and competitive leagues to social and recreational activity.
Over the past decade, the Council has maintained 55 pitches, invested more than £4 million in new 3G facilities and provided more than £4.6 million in support to local sports clubs and groups.
Research undertaken as part of the strategy highlights significant growth in participation, including a 74% increase in junior participation since 2016 and a substantial rise in participation among women and girls. The strategy also identifies the need for greater training capacity, increased flexibility in how pitches are used and stronger partnership working to meet future demand.
Chair of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee, Councillor Sharon Lowry, said: "Sport and physical activity make a hugely important contribution to the health, wellbeing and social life of our communities. We are proud to support a thriving sporting sector and to work alongside clubs, schools and community organisations that provide opportunities for people of all ages to get involved.
"This draft strategy sets out a positive and ambitious vision for the future. It focuses on supporting participation, improving facilities, strengthening partnerships and helping local clubs continue to grow and thrive.
"We want to hear from those who use our pitches and facilities, as well as those who may benefit from them in the future. I would encourage everyone with an interest in sport, recreation and community wellbeing to take part in the consultation and share their views."
Following the consultation, feedback will be reviewed and used to help inform the final strategy before it is presented to Council for consideration.
The consultation is open now and can be completed online at: Draft Pitches Strategy
