Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council is proud to support International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) and we’re saying a big “Thank You” to our residents who recycle.
From May Day, Monday 5th May, residents who bring household recyclables to any of our Household Recycling Centres will receive one free bag of peat-free compost - while stocks last*.
The Household Recycling Centres are located at:
♻️The Cutts: Derriaghy, BT17 9HN
♻️Drumlough: Dromara Road, Hillsborough, BT26 6QA
♻️Carryduff: 8 Comber Road, Carryduff, BT8 8AN
This year’s ICAW theme is ‘Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost!’
Here are some of the positive environmental and community benefits that composting supports:
🌱Empowering local communities to manage waste effectively.
🌱Creating local job opportunities in the circular economy
🌱Creating healthier soils that are more resilient to changing weather conditions.
🌱Preventing soil erosion by reducing soil compaction and runoff.
🌱Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and acting as a “carbon bank”, helping to store carbon in the soil.
🌱Providing essential nutrients for plants, reducing the need for fertiliser by returning valuable nutrients to the soil.
🌱Supporting nutritious, locally grown food.
🌱Increasing biodiversity and supporting the local eco-system.
🌱Keeping our parks, gardens and community spaces healthy and vibrant.
Every time you recycle your food and garden waste in the brown bin, you’re helping create nutrient-rich, eco-friendly compost.

*Stocks are limited, when it’s gone, it’s gone.
