The Mayor’s Cup 2025 has been hailed a resounding success as young people from across the country came together for a weekend of football, community spirit and charitable giving.
Held across three venues, Lagan Valley LeisurePlex and Stanley Park on Saturday 2nd, and at Ballymacash Sports Academy on Sunday 3rd August, the tournament saw U11 and U12 teams complete while raising vital funds for the Mayor’s chosen charity, Action Cancer.
The event was led by Alderman Amanda Grehan, Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, whose passion for community inspired the creation of the tournament during her year in office.
Mayor Amanda said, “I’m incredibly proud of how our communities came together to make the first Mayor’s Cup such a vibrant celebration. Sport has the power to bring people closer, and this weekend proved just that. Thank you to every team, volunteer, supporter, and partner especially Choice Housing and Action Cancer – for making it such a success.”
More than just a football tournament, the event featured family-friendly activities, charity engagement, and a strong focus on inclusion and wellbeing. Action Cancer was present to raise awareness of its life saving services across Northern Ireland.
Lucy McCusker, Senior Fundraising Manager, Action Cancer, said, “We were honoured the Mayor’s chosen charity. The funds raised will support our free breast screenings, health checks and counselling. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed.”
Choice Housing, as principal sponsor, played a key role in supporting the event.
Cyril Moorehead, Good Relations Officer, added: “We’re proud to support events like the Mayor’s Cup that build stronger, healthier communities. It was a brilliant example of civic leadership in action.
The weekend concluded with a thrilling final match at Ballymacash Sports Academy, trophy presentations by the Mayor, and well-earned celebrations by the winning teams.
