Aghalee has been awarded the prestigious 'Welcome Award' in the Northern Ireland Best Kept Awards, organised by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council.

The award recognises Aghalee's high standards of presentation, civic pride and commitment to sustainability. Alongside attractive floral displays and well-maintained public spaces, the dedication of local volunteers and community groups, including the Aghalee Meet Up & Clean Up initiative, has helped create a welcoming environment that impressed the judges.

Alderman Sharon Skillen, Environment & Sustainability Chairman added: "Aghalee's success is a testament to what can be achieved when communities and Council services work together. While local volunteers and residents play a vital role, this award also recognises the dedication of our Parks and Amenities teams who work year-round to maintain high standards across the area.

"Their commitment to enhancing public spaces, maintaining floral displays and ensuring a welcoming environment has helped secure this prestigious accolade. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this well-deserved achievement."

Councillor Claire Kemp, Communities & Wellbeing Committee Member, said: "As both a local councillor and resident, I am especially proud to see Aghalee receive this well-deserved recognition. This award reflects the incredible community spirit that exists within the village and the dedication of residents who go above and beyond to make it such a welcoming place.

"Groups such as the Aghalee Meet Up & Clean Up volunteers have played a significant role in this achievement. Their commitment, alongside the efforts of many residents and community organisations, has helped make Aghalee a cleaner, greener and more attractive place to live, work and visit. This is an award the whole community can be proud of."

Now in its 69th year, the Best Kept Awards were established to encourage communities across Northern Ireland to take pride in their local environment.  The awards recognise not only aesthetic excellence but also efforts to promote sustainability, biodiversity, and community engagement.

There was further success for the Lisburn and Castlereagh area, with Royal Hillsborough receiving the ‘Best Kept Large Village, and Annahilt named runner-up in the ‘Best Kept Small Village’ category.

These accolades further highlight the dedication and community spirit that make the Lisburn and Castlereagh area stand out.
