VJ Day 80 Commemoration Event

Friday 15th August 2025

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, in partnership with the National Malaya and Borneo Veterans’ Association (NMBVA) and the Royal British Legion, will host special events to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day and to honour the legacy of Major Frank Pantridge CBE MC. 

This day of commemorations will reflect on the sacrifices made during the Far East campaign of the Second World War and the service of a local hero who revolutionised emergency medicine. 

This event is free and open to all members of the public. Veterans, families, and residents are warmly invited to take part in this day of remembrance and reflection.

VJ Day 80 Exhibition

Lagan Valley Island

This exhibition marks 80 years since VJ Day, sharing stories from the Pacific War, including that of local POW Frank Pantridge, who survived captivity and later invented the portable defibrillator. Various historic items will on display including his Military Cross.

The Royal British Legion is hosting a wreath laying service in Lisburn to commemorate VJ Day 80.

Join us for a short military parade to honour local veterans and remember those who served in the Far East campaign. All are welcome to attend and show their support.

About Major Frank Pantridge CBE MC

A former POW and military doctor, Professor Pantridge returned to Lisburn and changed medical history with his invention of the portable defibrillator.

He was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in 1990 for his contributions to global emergency care.
