King's Coronation Programme
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council will mark the Coronation of King Charles III with a programme of events for the local community.
The programme below highlights the council's activities.

King's Coronation Small Grants Programme
We have introduced a small grants programme to support community/voluntary organisations based in and/or operating within the Lisburn and Castlereagh area who are wishing to develop and implement events, community festivals and/or street parties to mark the King's Coronation.
We will award grants up to a maximum of £500 per successful applicant.

Community watercolour painting competition
The council's Arts team will run a watercolour painting competition to mark the King's Coronation.
King Charles III is a keen painter himself and one of his paintings is on display in Hillsborough Castle.
Artists who are local to the Lisburn and Castlereagh area are welcomed to submit their watercolour artwork to this wonderful competition in order to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty, The King this Spring.
The competition opened on Tuesday 7th March 2023 and applicants can submit work until the closing date which is 12 noon on Tuesday 2nd May 2023. The theme of the competition is ‘Great Gardens’ and this can include anything from paintings of the Royal Gardens themselves or be inspired by applicants own or favourite gardens.
Applications can be made both digitally and in person and for those applicants who wish to submit their work in person, they also have the option of entering their work into an exhibition of the competition artwork that will run at ISLAND Arts Centre until Saturday 17th June. Winners of the competition will be announced by Tuesday 30th May 2023. King's Coronation - Livestream of Coronation Ceremony
Date: Saturday 6th May

The Coronation Ceremony of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey will be livestreamed on the screen in Market Square, Lisburn. Please come along and watch this historic moment with friends, family and neighbours.
Buckingham Palace has advised the following will happen on this date:

Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort will arrive at Westminster Abbey in procession from Buckingham Palace, known as ‘The King’s Procession’.

After the Service, Their Majesties will return to Buckingham Palace in a larger ceremonial procession, known as ‘The Coronation Procession’. Their Majesties will be joined in this procession by other Members of the Royal Family.

At Buckingham Palace, The King and The Queen Consort, accompanied by Members of the Royal Family, will appear on the balcony to conclude the day’s ceremonial events.

Tree planting
Date: TBC
Following the King's Coronation we will plant a tree in Castle Gardens, Lisburn to mark this historic occasion. As it grows it can be enjoyed by present and future generations.

Service of Thanksgiving
In partnership with Lisburn City Centre Ministers’ Fellowship, the council will hold special Interdenominational Service of Thanksgiving for His Majesty The King at Lisburn Cathedral.
The service will be conducted by the Lisburn City Centre Ministers' Fellowship.
This event will be livestreamed on the council's Facebook page and on the screen in Lisburn City Centre.
King's Coronation Royal Hillsborough Market

Mayor's Carnival Parade and Family Fun Day
Date: Saturday 22nd April
Time: 12 noon to 5.00pm
Our annual Mayor's Carnival Parade and Faily Fun Day will see thousands of people take to the streets of the city centre to enjoy the spectacle of our carnival parade with local schools and community groups alongside professional performers. The parade will leave Lagan Valley Island and travel around the city centre to Wallace Park via the Magheralave Road entrance.
Residents can also enjoy the Family Fun Day and all the activities it will include in Wallace Park from 12 noon.

Commemorative Flowerbeds
Flowerbeds will be planted in May in Moat Park in Dundonald and in Royal Hillsborough to mark the King's Coronation.
The floral display, planted by our Parks and Amenties team, will be reflective of this momentous occasion.

Community tapestry project
We want to work with local groups and residents from across all seven DEAs to create a commemorative quilt/tapestry in recognition of King Charles III's Coronation.

Waringstown Cloth
On loan to us, the 'Waringstown Cloth' is the earliest-known Irish linen of its type. Dating from 1727 it shows King George II’s coronation and also a map of London from 1711.
You can view it as part of our upcoming exhibition featuring linens with a Royal connection that will open in May.

The Coronation Big Lunch
Date: Coronation Weekend 6th to 8th May
Neighbours and communities across the United Kingdom are invited to share food and fun together at Coronation Big Lunches from the 6th to the 8th May 2023, in a nationwide act of celebration and friendship.
From a cup of tea with a neighbour to a street party, a Coronation Big Lunch brings the celebrations to your neighbourhood and is a great way to get to know your community a little better.
Free downloadable resources will also be made available online by the Big Lunch team at CoronationBigLunch.com, to help people and communities start their Coronation Big Lunch planning.

The Big Help Out
Date: Monday 8th May
The Big Help Out is being organised by The Together Coalition and a wide range of partners such as The Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service and faith groups from across the United Kingdom. The Big Help Out will highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities across the nation.
In tribute to His Majesty The King's public service, The Big Help Out will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. The aim of The Big Help Out is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend.

National Lottery Awards for All Northern Ireland
National Lottery funding is available for local communities to deliver new or existing activities to mark the Coronation of His Majesty.
They are looking for ideas that:
- bring people together and build strong relationships in and across communities
- improve the places and spaces that matter to communities
- help more people to reach their potential, by supporting them at the earliest possible stage

Coronation Champions Awards
In honour of Their Majesties’ service to the country, Royal Voluntary Service is launching the Coronation Champions Awards for volunteers, an official Coronation project.
Together with Her Majesty The Queen Consort, the awards will celebrate extraordinary volunteers across the country who have been contributing to their communities.
Nominations close at 23:59 on Sunday 2 April 2023.
