What benefits can I get and how do I claim?

Universal Credit is a payment for people over 18 but under State Pension age who are on a low income or out of work. It includes support for the cost of housing, children and childcare.

Contribution Based Benefits

If you have worked and paid enough National Insurance contributions, usually within the last 2 years, you may be able to claim a contribution-based benefit.

Where can I find help to get another job?

Job Centre Online (NI) Use the free job search tools online at to create and manage your own account as well as tailoring your job search preferences to suit the jobs you are looking for. You can also create a profile, upload your CV and receive email alerts to new jobs notified to the Department.

Company websites and social media feeds – many employers do not advertise their vacancies but have a vacancies section on their website where you may be able to apply online

  • newspapers and trade journals – find out what day your local newspaper advertises jobs
  • word of mouth – speak to your family and friends to ask if they know of any vacancies
  • social media – look on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter or Linkedin and like or follow employers you may like to work for
  • recruitment agencies – some agencies specialise in certain types of work. Look online for your local ones
