Rural Village Regeneration

During the period 2011 - 2015 both the Lisburn City Council and Castlereagh Borough Council areas benefited through funding received from the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme. The funding was managed through Lagan Rural Partnership who engaged with five village communities from the Lisburn and Castlereagh rural area to develop and produce Strategic Vision and Action Plans.

The action plans form the basis of a fifteen year vision for each community as a guide to develop regeneration projects that will improve the social and economic future of the villages involved. A number of these action plans have now been successfully implemented, these include successful projects in the villages of Glenavy, Maghaberry, Moneyreagh, Moira and Milltown. Projects included Environmental Improvement Works, the development of playparks, community gardens and the renovation of community facilities.

The overall investment in the above projects was in the region of 1.5 million.

The next strand of the Village Renewal Scheme will be announced in the coming financial year but will be an opportunity to further develop the Rural Communities of the new Council area.
