Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council in partnership with the other super councils and the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) want to raise awareness of maintenance hazards in the workplace. The campaign aims to reduce the number of workers who are being hurt or are experiencing ill health as a consequence of inadequate and unsafe maintenance activities.
Maintenance is a process that is carried out in all sectors and all workplaces. It involves work on buildings, plant, equipment and vehicles so that they are able to function normally and remain fit for purpose.
Maintenance includes preventive routine actions such as cleaning, lubrication, replacing parts, inspection and thorough examination. It also includes corrective actions when a fault is detected or a break-down occurs such as repairs or clearing blockages.
The 3 key topics being targeted by inspectors are:
- Working at Heights
- Asbestos
- Isolation of workers from hazards during maintenance
To discuss any maintenance issues in your business contact the Council's Environmental Health Service on 028 9244 7300 or ehealth@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk
