Health and safety

All businesses within our area that are enforced by us for occupational health and safety standards need to be registered.

These include:

  • retail
  • wholesale
  • restaurants / takeaways
  • hotels
  • places of entertainment
  • offices
  • leisure facilities
  • residential homes
  • childcare / nurseries
  • hair/beauty/nails

Depending on the nature of the workplace, enforcement may fall to the Health & Safety Executive.

Registering your business

You can download a form by clicking here and then email your completed form to ehealth@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk

We will also accept postal or hand delivered copies to: Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Island Civic Centre, The Island, Lisburn, BT27 4RL.

How we monitor the health & safety of your business

  • carry out inspections of business premises to assess the controls in place to deal with hazards
  • provide advice to businesses and the public regarding health and safety at work
  • investigate complaints relating to unsafe premises or working conditions
  • investigate accidents reported to the department
  • implement campaigns and initiatives to raise awareness of Health and Safety issues. This can include nationwide initiatives delivered together with other local councils and the HSENI

Reporting an accident at your workplace

Legally employers, self-employed people and those in control of premises must report certain types of accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences to their enforcing authority. This could be to either us or the Health and Safety Executive (HSENI).

All accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences can be reported to the HSENI, regardless of whether or not they are the enforcing authority. They will then forward the relevant forms to us if it is our responsibility to enforce the business.

The following must be reported:

  • death or major injury
  • over 3-day injury to employees/self-employed people
  • a member of the public directly seeking medical attention
  • dangerous occurrence
  • disease – notification from a doctor

Forms

You can use the online reporting forms available from the Health and Safety Executive NI website

Alternatively, hard copy forms are also available to download on this link from the HSENI website and on completion should be sent to: The Accident Clerk, HSENI, 83 Ladas Drive, Belfast, BT6 9FR.

For more information on the RIDDOR legislation access a PDF booklet on the link.
