Project description

The Castlereagh Urban Framework (CUF) 2021 identified a number of projects within the Carryduff area.  We have appointed AECOM as the design team to develop Stage 1 Feasibility Proposals and an outline business case for the Carryduff Public Realm Project detailed in the CUF 2021 report.

The outline business case (OBC) will establish the need for the Public Realm Project and enable LCCC to undertake funding applications to develop the detailed design proposals, undertake planning submissions and procure a contractor to undertake the works.

We are engaging with statutory agencies and the local community to develop the feasibility proposals for inclusion in the OBC.  Further opportunities for engagement will be available at future stages in the project development, particularly at planning submission stage, however your views are a very important part of shaping the project at this feasibility stage.

The Public Realm Scheme extends from the existing Roundabout on the A24 Saintfield Road and includes the A24 Ballynahinch Road to the junction with the B178 Hillsborough Road, the A7 Saintfield Road from the A24 Roundabout to the junction with the B178 Comber Road and Church Road from the Comber Road junction to the Ballynahinch Road junction.

The public realm proposals will include:

  • new surfacing to footways
  • street tree planting
  • softworks to include hedge and ornamental planting
  • removal of overgrown verge planting and replacement planting
  • public seating spaces

Improvements to Church Road to consider widening and new surfacing to footways, pedestrian crossings, street lighting improvements and undergrounding of overhead utilities.

Improvements to open space will also consider improved access to Carryduff Park and improvements at the library in co-ordination with an ongoing project to facilitate a โ€˜Menโ€™s Shedโ€™.  Co-ordination with Translink to facilitate their proposals for a Mobility Hub and upgrade works to the Queensway bus stop on the Ballynahinch Road.
