Lisburn Museum’s Travelling Cabinets of Curiosity

Lisburn Museum’s Travelling Cabinets of Curiosity

March 26, 2020

We are delighted to announce that the British Museum Trust has awarded the Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum a grant of £8000 to establish a Travelling Museum service which will get up and running when the time is right.

The project, ‘Lisburn Museum’s Travelling Cabinet of Curiosities’ will see the Museum, its staff and collection brought to ratepayers across the council area.  The Museum’s collection comprises over 22,500 items, from textiles, rare books, historic costumes, art, natural history specimens and even a vintage fire engine.

Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee said: “This grant is fantastic news for the Museum service and the wider council area.  Through the purchase of secure museum-standard cases the Travelling Museum will allow us to bring the Museum and its wonderful collection to new audiences, or those that find it difficult to travel. Unfortunately under our current circumstances we cannot implement this straight away but we will keep the public informed when it is likely to be operational.”

The museum is also working on an exciting virtual museum project looking at innovative ways for you to keep history very much alive and engaging in our present time.  In the meantime why not use this opportunity to discover the history of Lisburn and Irish Linen at:
