Council Offers Community Grants to Celebrate 75th Anniversary of VE Day

January 31, 2020

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is proud to launch its ‘VE Day 75th Anniversary Celebration Community Grant Scheme’.  It will award grants, up to a maximum of £500, on a competitive basis, to constituted groups wishing to celebrate the forthcoming 75th Anniversary of VE Day within their communities.

The scheme for applications opens on  7th February 2020. Submitted application forms must meet the scheme’s requirements of an inclusive community event with a central theme of VE Day.

Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee, speaking about the grants, said: “Throughout Northern Ireland there will be events organised to allow communities to mark the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.  The council wants to give its local communities the opportunity to become involved in the memorable occasion of the guns falling silent in Europe at the end of World War Two.

“The council requires the groups which receive a VE Day grant to hold their all-inclusive, open and accessible to everyone events between Friday 1st May and Saturday 9th May 2020. As millions of people took to the streets in May 1945 to celebrate peace after years of carnage we want to see local communities come together and build relationships on this 75th Anniversary of VE Day in May.  I hope that community groups across the Lisburn Castlereagh area will apply for funding to celebrate this occasion,” he concluded.

The 75th Anniversary of VE Day on Friday 8th May 2020, has been designated a Bank Holiday.  This will provide people across the UK and around the world to meet with old and new friends to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of our ancestors who were part of that dark and terrifying period of our history.

Application forms and guidance notes are available by contacting the council’s Communities Unit on 028 9244 7679 or clicking here.

The closing date for the receipt of completed applications is 4.00pm on Friday 6th March.
